If you want greater success in your career, or just life in general, here are five must-haves:

1. Have a dream

If you haven’t defined what ‘success’ means to you, how will you ever know if you’ve achieved it? Take the time to dream and find out what is really important to you. With dreams come passion, and with passion comes success.

2. Understand yourself

The most successful people you’ll ever meet understand themselves extraordinarily well. They know what motivates them, what frightens them and what skills they do and do not possess. They don’t delude themselves. Have the courage to be truly introspective.

3. Understand others

There are very few things in life that don’t involve other people. The better you can understand and engage the people around you, the more they will help you on your journey.

4. Take Action

The world is full of people who are gunna do things, woulda done things or shoulda done things. It’s the people who actually do things that have success. Don’t just talk – do something!

5. Have a positive attitude

You’d be hard pressed to find a truly successful individual who does not also have a truly positive attitude. Positive people don’t focus on problems, they focus on solutions. They accept the bumps and bruises life throws at them, and look for the opportunities on the horizon.

The great thing about success, however you choose to define it, is that it is remarkably reproducible. You don’t have to reinvent the proverbial wheel, you just have to study the people around you who have already made it, and model yourself after them.
