A lot of times we all find ourselves faced with having to make difficult choices. Do I go out with my friends, or stay home and study? Do I just listen to my coworkers as they gleefully trash Suzie, or do I stand up for her? Do I try and stick things out when times get tough, or do I look for greener pastures? Sometimes the best course of action isn’t always obvious. How do you decide?

The answer lies in having a clear understanding of your personal priorities. What are the things in life that are truly important to you? What are your goals? What are your values? When you have confidence in your answers to these questions, a lot of difficult decisions suddenly become a lot easier. These priorities are like True North to an explorer. Once you have this unchanging reference point, you can navigate the choices in your life with confidence and make the right decisions for the right reasons.

We often refer to people who have achieved this level of self-awareness as being ‘centred’ or ‘well-balanced,’ and this characteristic is highly respected both in the workplace and at home. The first place to look, therefore, when building either business or personal relationships, is inward. The better you understand yourself, the stronger a foundation you have for connecting with the people around you. Take some time over the next couple of weeks to think about the above-mentioned questions. Write down your answers and review them from time to time. You’ll be glad you did.
